Tsunami School Safety Preparedness Guide for Coastal Areas of Pakistan

The “Tsunami School Safety Preparedness Guide for Coastal Areas of Pakistan,” developed in 2019-2020, serves as a critical resource to safeguard children and school assets from tsunami risks. This initiative, funded by the Government of Japan and supervised by the UNDP with technical support from the Network of Disaster Management Practitioners, is part of a broader regional effort to enhance disaster preparedness in 18 tsunami-prone countries.

The guide addresses the vulnerability of Pakistan’s coastal schools, particularly in Sindh and Balochistan, to earthquake and tsunami hazards stemming from the Makran Subduction Zone. It provides practical steps for schools to develop comprehensive safety plans, conduct risk assessments, and carry out evacuation drills. By aligning with the Pakistan School Safety Framework and the UNDP Regional Guide, the manual ensures a systematic approach to preparedness while considering local needs.

The guide emphasizes raising awareness among students, teachers, and parents through training, mock drills, and inclusive planning for children with special needs. It outlines roles for school safety committees and includes recommendations for addressing challenges such as limited early warning systems, insufficient evacuation sites, and resource constraints in remote areas. By fostering a culture of preparedness, the guide aims to reduce the risks posed by tsunamis and earthquakes, ensuring safer educational environments and resilient coastal communities.
